Observation and action checklist
A vegetable pot stays wet: check where the water can leave
Identify the container design, inspect moisture below the surface and record drainage before adding more water or rebuilding the pot.
Compare what you can see
An ordinary pot stands inside a water-filled saucer or outer cover
Check whether the drainage opening is submerged or blocked. Empty ordinary collected runoff when appropriate and keep the outlet usable; record whether the media remains wet afterward.
The container has an engineered reservoir and overflow
Identify the fill and overflow points from its instructions. Do not treat the intended reservoir as an accidental puddle or drill new holes without understanding the design.
The surface looks dry but the media below is still wet
Delay an automatic top-up and compare moisture at the same depth on the next check. Surface appearance and the condition around roots can differ.
Your next care visit
Check off what you have reviewed. Use the downloadable sheet to keep your observations.
Note the crop, pot size, outer cover, saucer and whether a reservoir is present. Locate the outlet visually. Make a simple sketch so another care visit can use the same fill and drainage points.
Feel the media below the surface in an accessible spot without tearing through roots. Record wet, moist or drying, plus recent rain and watering. Check exposure and shelter: a pot under an overhang does not receive the same rain as one beside it.
When the crop actually needs water, apply it to the media and watch where excess leaves. Record any standing water or blocked outlet. If the setup needs rebuilding, plan it with suitable potting mix and the plant's current stage in mind.

Keep this in mind
Do not add a gravel layer as a general drainage cure; it can reduce root space and worsen drainage. Do not pack potting mix tightly or keep adding water to a pot merely because the leaves are wilting.
What to record next
Repeat the below-surface moisture check and note the time since rain or watering. If the outlet is clear but the plant continues to decline, record the wider symptoms for a separate assessment.
- Crop and ordinary/reservoir container type
- Outlet, overflow and saucer arrangement
- Moisture below the surface
- Rain and watering since last check
- Observed runoff and standing water
- Setup change and next moisture result
