A vegetable pot stays wet: check where the water can leave Bed & Balcony · Care observation sheet · 2026-10-20 For vegetable containers that remain wet or stand in collected water. Persistent wilt or damaged roots can have other causes; this checklist examines the setup without diagnosing root disease. OBSERVATIONS Crop and ordinary/reservoir container type: ____________________________________________________________ Outlet, overflow and saucer arrangement: ____________________________________________________________ Moisture below the surface: ____________________________________________________________ Rain and watering since last check: ____________________________________________________________ Observed runoff and standing water: ____________________________________________________________ Setup change and next moisture result: ____________________________________________________________ CHECKS If an ordinary pot stands inside a water-filled saucer or outer cover: Check whether the drainage opening is submerged or blocked. Empty ordinary collected runoff when appropriate and keep the outlet usable; record whether the media remains wet afterward. If the container has an engineered reservoir and overflow: Identify the fill and overflow points from its instructions. Do not treat the intended reservoir as an accidental puddle or drill new holes without understanding the design. If the surface looks dry but the media below is still wet: Delay an automatic top-up and compare moisture at the same depth on the next check. Surface appearance and the condition around roots can differ. ACTION CHECKLIST [ ] 1. Record the container design Note the crop, pot size, outer cover, saucer and whether a reservoir is present. Locate the outlet visually. Make a simple sketch so another care visit can use the same fill and drainage points. [ ] 2. Check before watering Feel the media below the surface in an accessible spot without tearing through roots. Record wet, moist or drying, plus recent rain and watering. Check exposure and shelter: a pot under an overhang does not receive the same rain as one beside it. [ ] 3. Confirm the next water exit When the crop actually needs water, apply it to the media and watch where excess leaves. Record any standing water or blocked outlet. If the setup needs rebuilding, plan it with suitable potting mix and the plant's current stage in mind. NEXT CHECK Repeat the below-surface moisture check and note the time since rain or watering. If the outlet is clear but the plant continues to decline, record the wider symptoms for a separate assessment.
