Observation and action checklist
Start another basil plant from a tip cutting
Prepare a healthy stem with nodes, place it in moist medium and check roots before treating it as an established plant.
Compare what you can see
The parent has unexplained yellowing, underside growth or insects
Choose another healthy parent or postpone propagation. Taking a cutting is not a way to rescue unidentified disease. Use the basil leaf-check guide before continuing.
You have a healthy stem tip with several nodes
Use a clean cut and keep a short stem section. Illinois' general guidance uses three to six inches with at least two nodes; remove excess lower leaves and retain a few upper leaves.
The cutting has fresh leaves but roots are not yet evident
Continue caring for it as an unrooted cutting. Leaf appearance alone is not the root check used to decide on individual potting.
Your next care visit
Check off what you have reviewed. Use the downloadable sheet to keep your observations.
Pre-moisten suitable rooting medium and make a planting hole with a pencil. Label the container with the parent variety and cutting date before taking the stem.
Remove flowers or seed heads and leaves that would sit below the medium. Insert the lower stem into the prepared hole and gently firm the medium. Illinois describes an insertion depth of one to three inches for stem cuttings.
Place it in bright light outside direct sun. Maintain moisture and humidity; a clear cover is an option in the extension method. Inspect regularly, keeping the medium moist rather than leaving the pot standing in water.

Keep this in mind
Do not pull on the stem repeatedly to look for roots, apply a fertilizer dose to force rooting, or use a suspect parent simply because its tip still looks green.
What to record next
When checking the medium and plant condition, look for root development without tearing the stem. The general reference uses roots around one inch long as an individual-potting cue. Pot a rooted cutting into its own draining container, then record whether it stays upright and continues growing.
- Parent variety and health check
- Cutting date, stem length and nodes
- Leaves or flowers removed
- Medium, container drainage and insertion depth
- Light, moisture and cover checks
- Root evidence, individual potting date and follow-up
