Spinach seeds not emerging: check the soil before sowing again Bed & Balcony · Care observation sheet · 2026-10-20 For directly sown spinach before a stand is established. Malabar, New Zealand and other crops called spinach have different requirements; check the packet identity first. OBSERVATIONS Botanical crop name and cultivar: ____________________________________________________________ Seed packet age and sowing date: ____________________________________________________________ Depth and marked strip length: ____________________________________________________________ Soil temperature and observation time: ____________________________________________________________ Moisture, crusting or seed movement: ____________________________________________________________ Emergence count and wait/re-sow decision: ____________________________________________________________ CHECKS If the seedbed is warm during the day: Measure the soil near sowing depth if you have a soil thermometer. Compare it with crop and packet guidance before repeating the same sowing in unchanged conditions. If the surface dries or crusts between watering: Check whether moisture reaches the seed layer. Record the surface condition and any washing or movement after rain; more seed will not correct the same establishment problem. If there are no seedlings beyond the packet's expected window: Inspect a small marked section and keep the rest undisturbed. Note whether seed is present, has begun to grow, or is visibly deteriorated; this helps choose the next check. ACTION CHECKLIST [ ] 1. Reconstruct the sowing Write down the crop name, cultivar, packet age, date, approximate depth and location. Include rain or watering that could have moved the seed. Separate what you measured from what you remember only approximately. [ ] 2. Check conditions at seed depth Compare a bare sunny part of the bed with the actual planted strip. Record soil moisture and temperature at a consistent time. Avoid repeatedly digging through the whole sowing just to look for progress. [ ] 3. Re-sow a trial strip when conditions fit Use a small labeled batch in suitable cool-season conditions. Follow the packet depth and keep the seedbed evenly moist. Record the new start and expected check window so old and new seedlings are not mixed in the count. NEXT CHECK Count emerged seedlings in the marked strip at the chosen check date. If emergence remains poor, keep the packet and condition record for further investigation before committing the whole bed.
