Tall, thin seedlings: check light coverage before feeding more Bed & Balcony · Care observation sheet · 2026-10-20 For indoor vegetable starts with firm but elongated stems. This is not a universal lamp-distance chart, and it does not prescribe burying the stems of every crop. OBSERVATIONS Crop, sowing date and stage: ____________________________________________________________ Center/edge reference seedlings: ____________________________________________________________ Fixture type and current coverage: ____________________________________________________________ Light/dark schedule and crowding: ____________________________________________________________ Stem-base condition and moisture: ____________________________________________________________ Setup change and new-growth comparison: ____________________________________________________________ CHECKS If seedlings lean toward a window or the brighter part of a fixture: Compare where the light reaches the full tray. Record the difference before moving plants so you can judge whether the new arrangement improves later growth. If the lamp is far away or seedlings shade each other: Check the fixture instructions and crop requirements. Adjust coverage or spacing without assuming that a distance suitable for one lamp is safe for every LED or fluorescent unit. If the stem base is soft, narrow or discolored: Use the collapse-at-soil-line checklist as well. A lighting adjustment alone will not resolve a rotting stem base. ACTION CHECKLIST [ ] 1. Make a tray map Mark one seedling near the center and one near an edge. Photograph their stems and newest leaves with a scale nearby. Record the crop, sowing date, light source and whether neighboring plants block any of the light. [ ] 2. Change the setup deliberately Review the fixture's safe operating guidance, light coverage and on/off schedule. Provide a regular light and dark cycle. Separate crowded plants when appropriate to the crop and stage, taking care not to damage retained roots. [ ] 3. Judge the next growth Record the change you made and compare new leaves and stem growth at the next check. An already elongated section will not become shorter. Keep moisture checks separate so correcting light does not become an excuse to let small root balls dry out. NEXT CHECK Compare the marked center and edge plants again. When growth and weather allow an outdoor move, use a separate hardening and planting-readiness check rather than jumping directly from the light shelf to full sun.
