Harvesting outer leaves from container lettuce Bed & Balcony · Care observation sheet · 2026-10-21 For loose-leaf lettuce in containers. This page covers selective leaf picking, not a universal cutting height or a guaranteed repeat harvest. OBSERVATIONS Variety and leaf or head harvest goal: ____________________________________________________________ Date and plant height: ____________________________________________________________ Outer leaves removed: ____________________________________________________________ Photo of remaining center: ____________________________________________________________ Moisture and other visible signs: ____________________________________________________________ Next visit: usable leaves and seed stalk check: ____________________________________________________________ CHECKS If the label identifies loose-leaf lettuce and outer leaves are ready: Choose those older leaves for this picking. Keep your record focused on which leaves you removed and what growth remains. If you planted a heading type for a whole-head harvest: Follow that variety's harvest goal. Do not assume the outer-leaf schedule describes when its head is ready. If a seed stalk is rising or leaves have become overly mature: Review bolting and crop replacement before planning more pickings. A harvest checklist cannot reset the plant's growth stage. ACTION CHECKLIST [ ] 1. Identify the plant and stage Record the packet name and plant height. Photograph the whole plant so later checks can distinguish new growth from leaves already present. [ ] 2. Pick and count the outer leaves Make a small selective harvest rather than applying an unverified whole-plant cutting rule. Write down the number removed and photograph the remaining center. [ ] 3. Check the container afterward Record moisture and visible leaf condition. Choose the next inspection from what the plant is doing, not from a promised harvest interval. NEXT CHECK At the next visit, count newly usable outer leaves and note any seed stalk. Record a zero harvest honestly if the plant is not ready; compare the photograph before choosing another action.
