A cucumber stayed on the plant too long Bed & Balcony · Care observation sheet · 2026-10-21 For a known cucumber variety already producing fruit. Compare its label before interpreting color, and keep unusual damage separate from a harvest-stage judgment. OBSERVATIONS Variety and intended use: ____________________________________________________________ Packet harvest-size description: ____________________________________________________________ Date and wet or dry vine condition: ____________________________________________________________ Fruit picked and oversized fruit count: ____________________________________________________________ Positions of smaller fruit left: ____________________________________________________________ Next inspection date and missed-fruit notes: ____________________________________________________________ CHECKS If a hidden fruit exceeds the variety's intended harvest size: Record it as a missed harvest and remove it carefully. Check the rest of that plant for another fruit hidden in the same way. If color differs but the variety description is unclear: Recover the packet or supplier description. Record the color and size without deciding that color alone proves over-ripeness or disease. If the vines are wet: Wait for them to dry before harvesting. UMN advises this to reduce the risk of spreading disease while handling plants. ACTION CHECKLIST [ ] 1. Set a reference for this variety Write its intended use and harvest-size description on the sheet. Use that reference on each round rather than comparing every cucumber to one universal length. [ ] 2. Inspect the whole plant gently Look at the pot side, the support and beneath leaves. Avoid dragging or lifting the vine; disturbing it can break roots formed at its joints. [ ] 3. Record the harvest and fruit left Count fruit picked and oversized fruit found. Mark the position of small fruit left behind so the next inspection starts with a useful map. NEXT CHECK Inspect again as fruit develops. Compare the size and position of the fruit left behind, record newly hidden fruit, and shorten the gap between visits if you keep missing the desired stage.
