A crowded chive clump needs more room Bed & Balcony · Care observation sheet · 2026-10-21 For established, identified culinary chives. Use local growing conditions rather than a fixed calendar date to plan the work. OBSERVATIONS Clump age and original pot: ____________________________________________________________ Flowering and local conditions: ____________________________________________________________ Receiving pot labels and drainage check: ____________________________________________________________ Root and shoot condition of each section: ____________________________________________________________ Division date and first watering: ____________________________________________________________ Next visit: new leaves, wilt and moisture: ____________________________________________________________ CHECKS If a healthy established clump fills its available space: Prepare room for smaller rooted sections. Decide how many containers you can actually maintain before lifting the plant. If the plant is flowering or conditions are hot and dry: Schedule a more suitable division visit. General perennial guidance favors division outside flowering and avoiding a hot sunny day. If the base is soft or there is unexplained decline: Investigate that condition before distributing divisions. Record the affected area and seek identification if the cause is unclear. ACTION CHECKLIST [ ] 1. Prepare the receiving pots Check drainage holes and have suitable potting mix ready. Label each pot so its later growth can be matched to a specific section. [ ] 2. Lift and separate rooted sections Gently separate the clump, using a sharp tool where necessary. Keep vigorous shoots with healthy roots on each section, and keep sections shaded and moist until replanted. [ ] 3. Replant and record Place the sections into the prepared pots. Note their starting shoot condition, water as needed and photograph each label with its plant. NEXT CHECK Compare the labeled pots at the next care visit. Record new leaves, persistent wilting and moisture separately for each one before deciding whether it is ready for harvesting again.
