Forked or stubby carrots: inspect the bed before the next sowing Bed & Balcony · Care observation sheet · 2026-10-20 For a shape problem in otherwise recognizable cultivated carrots. Galls, tunnels, rotting tissue or widespread decline need a separate plant-health assessment. OBSERVATIONS Cultivar and expected root shape: ____________________________________________________________ Sample root length and branching point: ____________________________________________________________ Sample positions within the bed: ____________________________________________________________ Actual spacing and thinning history: ____________________________________________________________ Loose soil depth and obstacles: ____________________________________________________________ Next sowing change and comparison date: ____________________________________________________________ CHECKS If the packet describes a short or round-rooted type: Compare several roots with the expected shape before calling them stunted. Match the next cultivar to the depth of loose soil actually available. If neighboring roots touch, twist together or crowd one another: Measure the remaining gaps and record when the row was thinned. The final spacing, not the distance between initial seed marks, is the useful comparison. If many roots bend or stop at a similar depth: Inspect an empty harvested patch for stones, clods or a compacted layer. Treat this as evidence to investigate, not proof that every malformed root has the same cause. ACTION CHECKLIST [ ] 1. Keep a small sample set Photograph roots from a crowded area and an edge, if both are present. Label their positions. Record root length and where the branching begins; one unusual carrot is less informative than a repeated pattern. [ ] 2. Inspect space that is already clear Examine the soil where roots were removed. Note usable loose depth and obstacles without digging around carrots still growing. Review whether the crop was direct-sown or its roots were disturbed during establishment. [ ] 3. Design a small comparison sowing Prepare a short, unobstructed strip and choose a cultivar that fits its depth. Sow directly and mark the date. Thin to the packet guidance while young, cutting unwanted seedlings when pulling would disturb those you keep. NEXT CHECK Record the single main change in the new strip, such as spacing or cultivar. Compare its harvested roots with the labeled sample rather than with an idealized supermarket carrot.
