Several beet seedlings coming from one sowing spot Bed & Balcony · Care observation sheet · 2026-10-21 For identified beet seedlings in a container. Match the final spacing to the variety and intended harvest size; the planting plan is a starting layout. OBSERVATIONS Variety and monogerm label if present: ____________________________________________________________ Container sketch and cluster labels: ____________________________________________________________ Stems per cluster before thinning: ____________________________________________________________ Chosen final spacing and packet reference: ____________________________________________________________ Retained stems and measured gaps: ____________________________________________________________ Next visit: losses or unresolved crowding: ____________________________________________________________ CHECKS If several stems emerge from the same seed spot: Mark that cluster and count the stems. Ordinary beet seed balls can produce this pattern even when the sowing spots were spaced correctly. If the packet says monogerm but plants are crowded: Check whether neighboring sowing spots overlap. Monogerm seed does not remove the need to check actual plant spacing. If you want full roots but have kept every seedling: Choose which plants will remain. UMD describes thinning at about two inches tall and a final three-inch spacing; check your cultivar's instructions before applying that example. ACTION CHECKLIST [ ] 1. Draw the occupied spots Use the observation sheet to sketch one container. Label clusters A, B and C, then write the stem count beside each. [ ] 2. Mark the plants to retain Measure the gaps between those plants, including across a cluster. Compare the measurements with your packet and record the target you chose. [ ] 3. Thin and recount Remove surplus seedlings carefully. Record how many remain at each labeled spot and photograph the result from the same angle. NEXT CHECK At the next check, compare the retained plants and measured gaps with your sketch. Note any plants lost during thinning before deciding whether an actual gap needs another sowing.
