Yellow basil leaves: check the undersides Bed & Balcony · Care observation sheet · 2026-10-21 For a known basil plant. This checklist helps you gather evidence for a local diagnosis; it cannot confirm a disease from one symptom. OBSERVATIONS Plant label and date: ____________________________________________________________ Affected leaf positions: ____________________________________________________________ Upper and underside photo names: ____________________________________________________________ Gray growth seen or not seen: ____________________________________________________________ Recent humidity and crowding: ____________________________________________________________ Decision, identification result and next check: ____________________________________________________________ CHECKS If yellow leaves also have gray fuzzy growth underneath: Photograph both surfaces and compare the extension reference. Treat this as a reason to investigate downy mildew, with local confirmation if the signs are uncertain. If leaves are yellow but the underside looks clear: Record the clear underside too. Keep the cause open and review watering and other visible signs before applying a disease response. If downy mildew has been identified on the plant: UMD advises removing, bagging and discarding infected plants. For a replacement, consider a resistant basil variety and a less crowded position. ACTION CHECKLIST [ ] 1. Make paired photographs Choose the same leaf for the upper and lower views. Add one whole-plant photograph and note which leaves are affected. [ ] 2. Record the growing conditions Note recent wet or humid conditions and neighboring foliage touching the basil. Full sun and room for airflow help reduce infection risk. [ ] 3. Choose a next step you can explain Write down whether you will seek identification, inspect again, or replace an identified infected plant. Attach the observation that led to that choice. NEXT CHECK Compare another leaf at the next visit and record whether the pattern has spread. If replacing the plant, save the variety label and start a separate dated record for the new plant.
